“We are Building Up A New World” - Flobots at Home in Denver during the DNC
It’s no secret that we’re from Denver. Everywhere we go, we let people know how proud we are to represent the Mile High City. Denver is one of those little big cities that isn’t used to a lot of time in the spotlight.
However, all this is about to change, at least for several days at the end of this month. From August 25th-28th, Denver will host the Democratic National Convention and the entire cast of characters that accompany such an event. The eyes of the world will be on our hometown!
We have always believed that music is a platform for social change. With the camera lenses of the entire globe pointed at our home city, we have put a lot of thought into the significance of this historical moment.
The last 8 years have been dominated by war and fearmongering. Barack Obama’s grassroots campaign has succeeded thus far because it has understood two things: People in this country want change and they are ready and willing to serve something larger than themselves.
We believe this represents a fundamental shift in our national consciousness that is bigger than any candidate or campaign (or band). The new consciousness that is emerging is rooted in three understandings.
We must be honest with ourselves about the painful fact that US policy has included antidemocratic acts of violence.
We must commit ourselves to living in hope and building a radically different country based on shared values and a world of limited resources.
We must work together.
During the DNC we will seek to get this message across to all who will listen. We will perform for politicians and protestors, residents and reporters, music insiders and music fans, convention delegates and unconventional activists, people from down the block and people from all over the world.
We believe this year has the potential to mark a great turning point in the storyline of this country, to be the year in which we make a national commitment to existing in the world as a resource rather than a destructive force. We have a responsibility to make this possibility real.
During the DNC we will seek to embody the change we wish to see in the world by behaving as citizens of an America that does not yet exist. We invite you to join us.
